Most Common Gas Fireplace Problems

A cosy loungeroom focusing on a long gas fireplace.

Gas fireplaces provide a reliable source of heat for your home with the flick of a switch. There’s no need to source firewood, and minimal mess to clean up. A gas fireplace is energy-efficient, easy to run and can be just as attractive in your home as one of its wood-burning counterparts. However, just like any other type of fireplace (or indeed any household appliance), gas fireplaces can have their share of issues. Luckily, you can easily prevent many gas fireplace problems by taking proper precautions or fixing them with a bit of care.

As Sydney’s leading fireplace destination, Home Fires can be your go-to destination for quality gas fireplaces. With more than 40 years of experience working with fireplaces behind us, we’ve addressed every issue that can arise with a fireplace. We can supply, install and service the ideal fireplace for your home and help you troubleshoot any problems that may arise with it.

Here’s the Home Fires guide to common gas fireplace problems, as well as tips for maintaining the long-term functionality of your fireplace.

Common Problems with Gas Fireplaces

All fireplaces can experience issues from time to time, even in exceptionally high-quality models. The most common gas fireplace problems you’re likely to experience include:

Pilot light problems

Sometimes a gust of wind is all it takes to blow out the pilot light. However, if you find that your pilot light constantly fails to light or stays lit, it may be a sign of a faulty thermopile, a dirty or clogged pilot tube, or an issue with the gas valve. It’s essential to seek out a professional for fireplace repairs.

Malfunctioning thermostat

The thermostat regulates the temperature of the gas fireplace. When it malfunctions, it can cause the thermostat to turn off and on randomly or stop it from turning on at all. If the problem persists after changing the batteries or cleaning the contacts, it may be due to a wiring issue.

Double-sided gas fireplace problems

With their high heat output, double-sided fireplaces are ideal for warming up open-plan spaces or multiple rooms simultaneously. But while they’re versatile and convenient, double-sided fireplaces can have their issues, just like any other type of fireplace. Common double-sided gas fireplace problems include smoke leaking out into one or both rooms, non-functioning dampers, or white stains (mineral deposits) on the chimney or the walls around the hearth.

Faulty ignition system

Dust, dirt and grime can gather in your fireplace’s ignition system over time, preventing it from sparking correctly or causing a weak flame. Issues such as a clogged burner, a faulty spark igniter, or a gas line blockage can all cause problems with the ignition system. Cleaning and maintenance can help prevent ignition system issues.

Poor flame quality

A flame that’s weak or inconsistent can compromise both the quality of the heat and the cosiness of the room’s atmosphere. A dirty thermopile or flame sensor can impact your fireplace’s ability to maintain a strong and consistent flame. At the same time, issues with the wiring, gas valve or remote control signals can also reduce the power of your flame.

Frequent build-up of soot

On the whole, gas fireplaces produce less soot than the wood-burning kind. Noticeable soot buildup can indicate issues such as clogged burners or poor airflow, and may also be a sign that you’re overdue for a chimney inspection.

Gas Fireplace Maintenance Requirements

As spring sets in, the weather warms, and you find yourself using your fireplace less and less, it’s the perfect time to perform the necessary maintenance. Maintaining your gas fireplace helps protect its longevity and ensures the safety of its operation.

The most important gas fireplace maintenance tasks include:

Turning off the pilot light

If your gas fireplace has a standing (always lit) pilot light, ensure you turn it off during the warmer months. This saves you on your power bill and also ensures your fireplace is sufficiently cool when it’s time for a service.

Cleaning

Your gas fireplace should be cleaned every two to four months, depending on how often you use it and the type of environment in which it is used. Important areas to clean are the glass, gas logs, burner, interior casing and ventilation system, and basic cleaning products are all you need for the task (avoid using soap or cleaners with ammonia that can damage the glass). Make sure your fireplace is completely cooled down before you clean it, and leave the flue to a professional (once a year is recommended).

Use a soft or microfiber cloth to gently remove any dirt or dust that has accumulated on the louvres of the unit.

Servicing

Gas fireplaces should be professionally serviced at least once a year to ensure optimal performance and safety. If you use your fireplace frequently, consider scheduling a service at both the beginning and the end of the cold season.

Reliable Gas Fireplace Brands

The higher the quality of your fireplace, the less likely you are to face serious gas fireplace problems during the course of operation. With brands like Rinnai and Regency, gas fireplace problems may still strike, but they’re less likely and easier to fix than you can expect from a fireplace that cuts corners with its build quality.

Some particularly reliable gas fireplace brands available in Australia include:

Rinnai

Rinnai has been making Australian homes warmer and more comfortable since 1971, with an extensive selection of reliable heaters available in both gas and electric varieties.
